Dr. Cherry Brewton awarded NSTA Distinguished Service Award

Congratulations to Dr. Cherry Brewton for receiving the NSTA Distinguished Service to Science Education Award on March 31, 2017. This award honors members who, through active leadership and scholarly endeavor over a significant period of time, have made extraordinary contributions to the advancement of education in the sciences and science teaching.

Dr. Brewton has serves science education as the Executive Director of the Evans County Community Center in Statesboro, GA. She has also served as an Associate Professor and University Supervisor for Preservice Teachers at Georgia Southern University. She has also served as a middle school science teacher in the Georgia K-12 school system. On the national level, she has served as a member of the Multicultural Science Education Committee of NSTA, President of the Association for Multicultural Science Education (AMSE), Division Director of the Multicultural/Equity in Science Education, Author/Facilitator of Higher Qualified Teacher & Equity, and Facilitator of Students of Poverty Focus Group.

Dr. Brewton’s publications and grants include; Presenter, International Conference, Wuhan, China; Attended First White House Summit Science Education; Invited Lecturer, Science Teachers Association Nigeria; AMSE Legend Award; AMSE Service Award; and County Teacher of the Year.

Assistant Professor of Biology, Sewanee, TN

The Biology Department at the University of the South seeks two tenure-track assistant professors for positions in one of the nation’s top liberal arts institutions. The positions are in Evolution and Neurobiology. Both professors will contribute toward teaching at the introductory level and in advanced courses in their area of specialty. The University has a 3/2 teaching load with both lecture and lab sections counting toward that total. Successful candidates will be enthusiastic about teaching in the context of the liberal arts tradition in education, and will maintain active research programs with opportunities for undergraduate involvement.

Behavior Support Center (BSC): Teaches students with significant emotional disabilities in the least restrictive environment. Preparing Students for Independence (PSI): Teaches students with severe cognitive, communicative, sensory and/or physical disabilities in the least restrictive environment. Preschoolers Achieving Learning Skills (PALS): Teaches preschool aged students who are identified as having a disability.

ILLUSTRATIVE DUTIES:

  1. Develops and implements the student’s IEP utilizing specially designed instruction that is aligned with the curriculum and required content strategies.
  2. Leads and participates in IEP meetings for students assigned to designated caseload.
  3. Prepares and maintains IEP documents in a timely manner, including progress updates.
  4. Plans lessons that reflect accommodations and modifications for individual differences.
  5. Implements positive behavioral interventions and supports with discipline management procedures.
  6. Employs a variety of instructional techniques incorporating current technology tools applying the principles of Universal Design for Learning to facilitate individual student learning.
  7. Differentiates instruction for students with disabilities by employing a variety of instructional strategies.
  8. Develops data driven statements that accurately reflect each student’s present level of academic achievement and functional performance based on formal evaluation and classroom based assessment data.
  9. Utilizes the district’s web-based management systems to plan, implement, and monitor services for individual students by collecting, analyzing, tracking, and using specific data.
  10. Engages students in work that develops thinking skills.
  11. Plans and supervises purposeful assignments for teacher assistants.
  12. Maintains and improves professional competence by participating in district staff development.
  13. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and administrative regulations.
  14. Collaborates with general education staff to plan effectively for students with disabilities.
  15. Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, parents, and community members.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

Education: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university. Texas Teacher Certificate appropriate for level and/or subject area of assignment.

Other Requirements: The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (NCLB) requires a special education teacher who 1) is the teacher of record, and 2) provides direct instruction to students in any of the core academic subject areas defined by NCLB to be highly qualified in the core academic subject area(s). Special education teachers who deliver direct instruction to students with disabilities in core academic subject areas must meet the appropriate state special education certification requirements for the grade level that they are teaching in addition to meeting the same standard for subject matter competency to meet highly qualified. These requirements apply whether a special education teacher provides direct core academic instruction in a regular classroom, in a resource room, or in another non-traditional setting. Ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds, stoop, kneel, crouch, walk, twist, bend, climb, and be mobile. Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district. Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into focus; judge distance (close and distant); reach with arms extended and use hands to manipulate the keyboard. Ability to travel throughout the district and city by means of private or public transportation. If driving personal (or private) vehicle, must possess a valid driver’s license and appropriate insurance coverage.

The Association for Multicultural Science Education (AMSE) is seeking proposals for the 2016 – 2017 NSTA conferences in science education. One of the primary benefits of membership in AMSE is the opportunity to represent the association as a presenter within these national venues.

 

Sessions must focus on best practices addressing diversity and equity focused on the seven student groups identified in Appendix D of the Next Generation Science Standards:

 

  • Economically disadvantaged students,
  • Students from major racial and ethnic groups,
  • Students with disabilities,
  • Students with limited English proficiency,
  • Gender,
  • Students in alternative education programs, and
  • Gifted and talented students.
