Sign up for the Share-a-Thon!

One of our goals in AMSE is to connect our members with opportunities to share their expertise. We are really excited that this year, all AMSE sponsored sessions in St. Louis will be presented by AMSE members! If you didn’t submit a proposal for a presentation, there’s still another chance to share your amazing work. Please see the message below from Dr. Carrie Jones, NSTA’s High School Division Director.

“Set your sights higher at the High School Share-a-Thon!

Share your best lesson(s) with other educators by volunteering to informally present at our annual Share-a-Thon in St. Louis!

You will have space at a table and educators will circulate the room to engage in hands-on activities, collect information and resources, and network with other educators.

Saturday April 13th from 9:30-11:00AM in Grand Ballroom D/E, Hyatt Regency St. Louis at the Arch

Please go to: https://tinyurl.com/y9ljbv9t to let us know what you would like to share!

If you have questions please contact Dr. Carrie Jones at ncscienceteacher@yahoo.com.

If accepted, all presenters are required to be registered for the NSTA conference in order to present and all accepted presenters must complete the NSTA Safety Form, which will be provided to you if your proposal is accepted. You will be notified about your acceptance in February. We cannot accept vendors/exhibitors at this time for presenting, but feel free to contact us if you would like to provide a door prize.”

Shell One-Day Institute: Embracing an Equitable Mindset: Developing Culturally Proficient Leaders

PLI-6—Shell One-Day Institute: Embracing an Equitable Mindset: Developing Culturally Proficient Leaders

Audience: K–12 teachers, Science Specialists, STEM Coordinators, Professional Developers, Administrators

Presenters: Natacia Campbell, NSTA Multicultural and Equity Division Director and Director of Human Resources, Joliet Public Schools District 86, Joliet, IL; Andrea Evans, Director, Carruthers Center for Inner City Studies, Northeastern Illinois University, Chicago, Illinois

Framing Questions

  1. What do you think it means to be culturally proficient?
  2. How do our personal biases affect students?
  3. Which group(s) within your class(es), school(s), or district have significant discrepancies in opportunity and/or achievement?
  4. What are some strategies that can be used by teachers, schools, and districts to address inequities/create equitable conditions, supporting all students and their learning?

Outcomes

At the end of the session, participants will be able to

  1. Implement strategies that can be used by teachers, schools, and districts to improve cultural proficiency and enhance equity for all
  2. Use tools to assess cultural proficiency and analyze gaps in opportunity and/or achievement
  3. Identify supporting resources

Session Summary

“Powerful leaders are those who have the courage to take the step and embark on the journey” as stated by Blankstein & Noguera in their book Courageous Leaderships for District-Wide Success. The persistence of achievement gaps by race, class, and gender continue to challenge our educational system. The explanations for achievement inequities are many, yet it is important for educators to locate within schools and districts, the beliefs, programs, policies, and practices that may in fact perpetuate achievement gaps. This institute brings together individuals who want to further their journey toward becoming culturally proficient leaders, helping to ensure high levels of success for all students. Throughout the day participants will address personal and professional bias, gaps in equitable services, and issues of access. Participants receive Culturally Proficient Leadership: The Personal Journey Begins Within by Raymond Terrell and Randall Lindsey to use as a tool, helping leaders view “personal and professional behaviors in a context of understanding, appreciation, and recognition of difference and diversity.” Attendees will share experiences, learn about tools used in developing cultural proficiency, review data and effective programs, identify possible next steps, as well as create alliances with other science educators.

Educators are encouraged to attend in teams of two to four.

Vernier Software & Technology Partners with the Association for Multicultural Science Education

With Vernier support, AMSE members will share the importance of diversity and equity in science classrooms during regional NSTA conferences

BEAVERTON, Oregon, September 12, 2017 — Vernier Software & Technology has partnered with the Association for Multicultural Science Education (AMSE), an affiliate association of the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), to support AMSE as it discusses diversity and equity in science classrooms during NSTA’s three regional conferences this fall.

“AMSE is a leader in promoting diversity within teacher leadership and helping to drive ongoing dialogue around multicultural science education,” said John Wheeler, CEO of Vernier Software & Technology. “We share this commitment to diversity and equity in science education and are proud to partner with AMSE to support their ongoing work.”

AMSE is organized to stimulate and promote science teaching to students of culturally diverse backgrounds in an effort to motivate such students to consider science-related careers; explore and promote the improvement of science curriculum, educational systems, and teaching methods in schools to assist such stimulation; recruit and involve teachers of all minorities in science education; and initiate and engage in activities and programs in furtherance of improving the science education of culturally diverse students.

“It is so important that there is an ongoing dialogue about multicultural science education and how cultural responsiveness helps meet the needs of all students,” said Sharon Delesbore, Ph.D., president of the AMSE Board of Directors. “Through our partnership with Vernier, we are able to reach more educators and have more conversations about the importance of these topics — and their impact on both teaching and learning — at NSTA forums across the country.”
